Gaslighting the Psychic - Taking Our Power Back from the Joke

Let’s get this out of the way up front! Being psychic is not a gimmick, a joke, or a punchline. And yet for centuries, that’s exactly how the world has treated it.

The art of seeing, the ability to intuit, to connect beyond the veil, to sense what others miss - has been mocked, criminalized, diluted, and warped by systems that fear anyone who can’t be controlled.

Sound familiar?

If you carry intuitive gifts, you’ve probably been called crazy. Dramatic. Too sensitive. You’ve been accused of making it up, playing pretend, or worse, being dangerous. And if you’ve ever tried to speak truth in a room full of people invested in maintaining the status quo, you already know gaslighting the psychic is a damn tradition.

Persecution Has a Long Memory

Throughout history, the seers, the healers, the witches, and the oracles were feared not because they were wrong, because they were right. Because they could see through the illusions. Because they weren’t easily manipulated. Because they held power that didn’t require permission.

And the dominant systems (be it religious, political, or patriarchal) couldn’t have that.

So we were branded heretics. We were burned. We were silenced.

And even now, in this allegedly enlightened age, we’re still battling the same underlying narrative; only now it comes with a smirk and a studio audience.

“Psychic” Has Been Treated Like a Dirty Word

For years, I dropped the word “psychic” from how I described myself. The stigma was too heavy. Too many people heard that word and immediately jumped to fraud, delusion, or some caricature of a neon-lit crystal ball and vague platitudes.

Never mind that I’ve been doing this work for decades. Never mind the clarity, accuracy, and transformation that came through it. The word itself had been weaponized against legitimacy.

And let’s talk about irony for a second…

Yes, I was on the Psychic Friends Network in the 1990s. (Cue the Dionne Warwick jokes.) I was doing the work. I was helping people. And then they told me I needed to keep callers on the line longer to make more money.

That’s when I realized, even inside the psychic world, the same corporate manipulation was at play.

I was there to serve spirit, not play games with people’s money or time.

So I left.

When Media Makes Us the Punchline

Not long ago, I watched a TV show about divine beings living among humans. It explored mythology, spiritual themes, and even dared to touch on the idea of magick and miracles. I was in. This could be the kind of mainstream representation we’ve been waiting for.

Then came the episode featuring a psychic.

Guess what? They made her a fraud.

They played it out like a con. A scam. A sad, manipulative clown making money off grief.

I want to say I laughed it off (and eventually, I did) however in that moment, I was pissed. Not surprised, simply offended.

Because once again, the intuitive was cast as the villain. Or worse, the joke. And this wasn’t some low-budget hack job. This was mainstream, modern, and “spiritually themed.”

Even we can’t catch a break in stories supposedly about us.

Why This Still Matters

You might be thinking, “It’s just a show. Just one word. Who cares?”

Well, here’s the thing, language shapes perception. Media shapes belief. When every other portrayal of psychic ability is a scam, a trauma response, or an unhinged stereotype it damages the collective trust in something that is deeply human and profoundly sacred.

Worse, it convinces gifted people to stay hidden. To water themselves down. To second guess the very thing they were born to bring forward.

We internalize the ridicule until we’re the ones gaslighting ourselves.

You’re Not Crazy. You’re Just Ahead of Your Time.

If you’ve ever been made to feel ridiculous for your gifts, let me say this as clearly as possible…

You are not crazy. You are not a fraud. You are not dangerous.

You are tuned in. You are connected. You are part of a lineage that stretches back through time… one that’s always been on the edge, and always under fire.

And guess what? We’re still here.

And no amount of late-night punchlines or dismissive eye rolls is going to silence the knowing that lives in your bones.

My Final Thoughts… Take Back the Word

Let’s reclaim it. Let’s call ourselves psychic if that’s what resonates. Let’s stand in the truth of our gifts, even if they make people uncomfortable.

Let them laugh. Let them side-eye. Let them try to make it sound silly.

While they’re busy mocking it, we’ll be busy changing lives.

Because this work? It’s not a trend. It’s not a parlor trick. It’s not entertainment.

It’s sacred.

And the more we treat it that way, the more permission we give others to rise into it.

So light your candle. Read your cards. Speak your messages. Own your truth.

The world needs more real seers, not fewer.

And the gaslighting? It ends with us.
